Meeting with Shanghai Institute for Science of Science on Shanghai's Innovation Center Development

On 17 August, Mr. Li Wan, Vice Dean of Shanghai Institute for Science of Science, together with officials of Shanghai Commerce Department, Research and Development Commission, and Science and Technology Commission, visited the Chamber and met with the Shanghai Chapter representatives and members to discuss the developments of the Shanghai’s innovation center initiative. Mr. Serafino Bartolozzi, Board member of European Chamber Shanghai Chapter, and Dr. Ioana Kraft, General Manager of the Shanghai Chapter, welcomed delegation and highlighted the major barriers for foreign R&D center to expand in China. These include limited access of government R&D funding, IP enforcement and protection and difficulties in attracting and maintaining both domestic and global talents in Shanghai. In particular, Mr. Bartolozzi stressed the importance of free internet access and tolerance of failure to R&D staff. The meeting was followed by a 2-hour extensive discussion with industry members from chemical, healthcare and manufacturing sectors.
